While this minivan is certainly capable on the road, and designed with style in mind, the cabin is where it really shines. Chrysler has included just about everything possible to make everyday family life easier, as far as traveling goes. The most important feature, both from a usability stand-point and competitive stand-point, is that this van features Stow'n Go seats. The second and third-row seats can be folded into the floor. No more fumbling to release and remove awkward heavy seats and then try to find a suitable place to store them. Combine this with Chryslers new YES Essentials seat trim that repels all but the most caustic stains, and you have a truly family-friendly vehicle. The Town & Country's standard occupant count is seven. Having succeeded in part on the strength of its Stow 'n Go second-row seats - which fold into the floor - Chrysler also offers optional Swivel 'n Go: second-row captain's chairs that independently rotate 180 degrees and slide fore and aft to face the third row. The Town & Country also has power windows - in the sliding doors, too - with power sliding doors and a power liftgate optional. There are numerous storage nooks, pockets and bins throughout the interior, including a dual glove compartment.
The floor console between the front seats has removable, dishwasher-safe cupholders. An optional console has many sliding drawers that can open individually or together, including from the backseat, and contains a 12-volt power outlet. The Chrysler Town & Country is tall, heavy and long, and it drives like you'd expect given those characteristics. The Town & Country offers single and double rear DVD entertainment options. The single screen is available only in the LX model and is located in the second row. The double screen version adds a second screen for the third row. Both are available with Sirius Backseat TV. The TV has three channels, all aimed at kids: Cartoon Network, Disney Channel, and Nickelodeon. Four sets of headphones are provided, and with the dual-screen system, one screen can be tuned to TV while the other can play a DVD. Front passengers can listen to the radio while rear occupants watch a DVD or TV, and with the car in Park, front passengers can watch TV or a DVD on the dashboard screen.
The base trim is powered by a 3.3-liter V6 rated at 175 horsepower mated to a four-speed automatic transmission. The Touring model uses a more powerful 197 horsepower 3.8-liter V6, while the Limited is equipped with a 251 horsepower 4.0-liter V6. Both the Touring and Limited use a six-speed automatic. All trims come equipped with a tilting steering column, remote keyless entry and a tire pressure monitor. The gear selector, which looks like a center-console shifter, is located high on the dashboard, to the right of the gauges. There are two features to ease backing up and parking: a rear sonar sensor, standard on all trims, which sends an audible alarm when things are behind the van, and an optional rearview camera. A blind spot monitoring system and Chrysler's Rear Cross Path accident-avoidance system are optional. They sound an alarm and light an indicator on the side mirror when something is in the blind spot or approaching from behind the van, respectively. Rain-sensing wipers and auto-dimming headlamps are also available on Touring and Limited trims.
While the Chrysler model is obviously a minivan, it has more of an SUV like feeling to it, with its higher hood, squared-off rear end and the most stealthy sliding side doors. All in all, it's not too far from what passes as a crossover SUV nowadays. The 2010 Chrysler Town & Country is offered in one long wheelbase body style. The short wheelbase body style was dropped with the 2008 redesign. Sizewise, the Town & Country's size is comparable to several competitors. The Nissan Quest, Kia Sedona, Honda Odyssey, and Toyota Sienna are all within two inches, plus or minus, in overall length. The Town & Country's styling is somewhat boxy, with a pronounced front end that offers a hint of an SUV-like appearance. The roof is wide at the top, also contributing to the boxy look.
The 2010 Chrysler Town & Country LX ($26,430) comes with cloth upholstery, air conditioning with three-zone manual control, tilt steering wheel, front center console, stowable second-row bench seat, stowable third-row split folding bench seat, power first- and second-row windows, power third-row vent windows, power door locks, power exterior mirrors, remote keyless entry, four-speaker AM/FM/CD stereo, trip computer, conversation mirror, outside temperature display, and P225/65R16 tires on steel wheels with wheel covers.
The Touring model ($29,395) adds a leather-wrapped steering wheel with radio controls, two additional speakers, Sirius satellite radio, eight-way power driver's seat with lumbar adjustment, power adjustable pedals, overhead storage bins, 115-volt power outlet, heated exterior mirrors, power sliding rear doors, power rear liftgate, universal garage door opener, automatic headlights, fog lights, roof rack, and aluminum wheels.
The seven-seat minivan comes in LX, Touring and Limited trim levels, and competes with minivans such as the Toyota Sienna, Honda Odyssey and Hyundai Entourage. Chrysler puts a luxurious spin on the minivan with the Town & Country. Innovative seating and upscale features inside and out set this van apart from the competition. Here is the bottom line with this Chrysler model: it is the ultimate in family travel, whether it's a multi day trip, or a daily trip to school or to the store. The versatility of this minivan is amazing. It may not drive the best, but for consumers looking for a way to ease their busy family life, the Town & Country may be the trick.
