2010 Trim Levels for Compass
The 2010 Jeep Compass comes as two models, Sport and Limited, each with front-wheel drive (2WD) or all-wheel drive (AWD). The Compass Sport comes with standard cloth upholstery; air conditioning; tilt steering wheel; outside-temperature indicator; AM/FM/CD stereo with auxiliary audio jack; 60/40 split rear seat; fog lamps; roof rails; and P215/60R17 tires on aluminum wheels. The AWD Sport adds a locking center differential. The Quick Order Package ($2,125) adds power windows and locks and keyless remote entry; cruise control; YES Essentials cloth upholstery; height-adjustable driver's seat; fold-flat front passenger seat; reclining split folding rear seat; map lights; removable and rechargeable interior lamp; floor mats; rear privacy glass; and a 115-volt power outlet. A Sun/Sound group ($1295) adds a sunroof, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, Sirius satellite radio, and a nine-speaker Boston Acoustics sound system with speakers in the liftgate that can blast the crowd at tailgate parties.
The Compass Limited add leather upholstery; heated front seats; height-adjustable driver's seat with lumbar adjustment; fold-flat front passenger seat; reclining rear seats; leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls; cruise control; 6-disc CD changer; Sirius satellite radio; 115-volt power outlet; power windows, mirrors and locks; remote keyless entry; electronic vehicle information center; auto-dimming rearview mirror; universal garage door opener; floor mats; sport suspension; and P215/55R18 tires. The front and rear fascia and side moldings have shiny aluminum accents, and, like the Sport, the Limited AWD gets a locking center differential.
Jeep Compass Exterior
The Compass represented a new direction for Jeep in 2007, when it rolled out its first two car-based SUVs, the Compass and Patriot. Of the two, the Compass has more of a crossover look, especially from the sculpted side, with smoothly angular flares over the wheels and more laid back lines. The rear door handles are vertical, mounted on the C-pillars to preserve the character line. The 2010 Compass has matching moldings that dress up a deliberate accent groove. Body-colored door handles are available, in addition to standard black handles. The liftgate on the Compass is sloped at nearly a 45-degree angle, while those of the Patriot and Liberty are vertical; and the third side window, into the cargo area, is a stylized triangle while the others, again, are square. That slope at the rear of the Compass is matched by the steeply raked windshield, leading up to a roof that's slightly lower than that of the Patriot and almost five inches lower than the Liberty's. Black plastic roof rails continue from the top corners of the windshield all the way to the spoiler over the liftgate, channeling water over the roof.
Handling of the 2010 Compass
The Jeep Compass compact SUV shares a platform with the Dodge Caliber small wagon, which means that it's primarily a front-wheel-drive vehicle. Even if you order the optional four-wheel-drive system, known as Freedom Drive I, power goes only to the front wheels until slippage is detected, although the driver can lock the center differential in a 50/50 front/rear power split for extra traction when driving through wintertime gunk. A five-speed manual transmission is standard, and a continuously variable transmission (CVT) is optional. A CVT offers the convenience of a regular automatic transmission, but doesn't have fixed gear ratios -- instead of shifting, it just selects whatever ratio is most appropriate to the situation. The Compass has floor and engine-compartment silencers and an exhaust resonator that Jeep says will provide a quieter ride. Suspension tuning on Sport models is designed to provide a smoother, more comfortable ride. The Compass can also tow up to 2000 pounds, enough for personal watercraft, a snowmobile, a motorcycle or a small boat. The Compass offers a choice of front-wheel or full-time four-wheel drive. Two trims are available: Sport and Limited, which have a 172-hp 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine and five-speed manual transmission as standard equipment. A Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) is optional. A 158-hp 2.0-liter engine, available with the CVT only, is available on the FWD Sport trim. Jeep's compact, car-based Compass lacks the off-road ability of its larger siblings boast, but it does have limited ability thanks to optional four-wheel drive.
Compass Interior
The Sport is available with Jeep's YES Essentials upholstery, a rugged fabric that's stain, odor and static resistant. The front seat jacks upward, which is nice because the long dash makes it hard to see the ground in front of the car, even though the hood is short. The long dash is a result of the sloped windshield. Legroom is good, both front and rear. In fact, the Compass has 39.4 inches of rear legroom, which is almost four inches longer than in the larger Grand Cherokee. The Compass will be a fine vehicle for a family trip, with reclining rear seats optional on Sport and standard on Limited. The Compass cabin stay basically the same for 2010, but it does gain optional automatic climate control. The interior features a 60/40-split folding rear seat, plus an optional power driver's seat, optional fold-flat front passenger seat and optional power windows. The Jeep Compass cabin is roomy and comfortable. The front bucket seats are very comfortable without being soft.
Conclusion
The 2010 Compass is carried over from 2009, it is built on a car-based platform shared with the Dodge Caliber, the Compass is one of two front-wheel-drive models from Jeep - the other being the compact Patriot. Both cars are examples of why so-called crossover vehicles are supplanting traditional truck-based SUVs. Trim levels include the Sport and better-equipped Limited. Visit the official 2010 Jeep Compass site for the latest updates and information. Compass competitors include the Honda Element and Ford Escape. Most people think of Jeeps as tough off-road vehicles that love to get muddy, but the Jeep Compass isn't like other Jeeps. It doesn't look rugged, and it's not trail-rated. Instead, it's a car-based design built for the majority of small-SUV buyers, who want a fuel-efficient runabout that's easy to drive around suburbia and loaded with conveniences.
