Travel Through Time with the Wyoming County Historical Society
Northeastern Pennsylvania’s rich history is accurately and respectfully preserved through the hard work of the Wyoming County Historical Society. The heritage of this territory is as rich and lively as the land itself. Trace time along the Susquehanna River and explore your ancestry through the rolling fields of this fertile region.
Back to When It All Began
Established in 1946, the Wyoming County Historical Society was restructured in 1977. At this time, the dedicated group of historians vowed to collect and preserve valuable artifacts from the county in order to increase local understanding and instill historical appreciation for the times that came before.
In 1981, the Wyoming County Historical Society moved into the Harrison Street School Building, where they remain to this day. Here, the Society features a genealogical research library in addition to a museum that houses intriguing relics from the county and surrounding areas.
Resources: Get to Know Your Roots
For people interested in learning about their lineage and for those conducting research, the library is an extraordinary resource. Society members get unlimited access to the library and all its resources, as well as a discount on photocopies.
Historical articles about Wyoming County, articles from local newspapers, and genealogy or family histories are just some of the precious archives that have been preserved by the Society.
Time Travel Through the Museum
Walking down the halls of the museum feels like taking a journey to another era of Wyoming County. The various exhibits help to shed light on what life was like at different points in time. Some of the museum’s highlights include:
- Military artifacts dating back to the Revolutionary War
- One-room schoolhouse display
- Clothing, including a Victorian wedding gown
- Musical instruments and even local sheet music
- Hand tools and old-time machinery
In addition to these fascinating exhibits, you will also encounter antique artifacts from the local tannery and more!
